Set in a fantastical version of medieval Europe, the film kicks off with a familiar yet ominous premise: after surviving a harrowing encounter with a witch in their childhood, Hansel and Gretel dedicate their lives to hunting down and exterminating witches who prey on innocent children. Their journey takes them into the heart of a mysterious forest, where they face the sinister forces of witchcraft and dark magic. As the story unfolds, the mood shifts from a whimsical fairy tale to a gritty exploration of vengeance and survival. The central conflict arises when a powerful witch, portrayed by Famke Janssen, threatens not only the siblings but also the village they aim to protect. The film delves into themes of identity and familial bonds, revealing how past trauma shapes the present. With a blend of horror, action, and dark humor, Wirkola crafts a taut narrative that keeps viewers invested in the characters' fates while questioning the morality of their brutal methods against witchcraft.
