Set against the harrowing backdrop of World War II, "Ghosts of War" follows a group of American soldiers who are assigned to protect a French castle. The film opens with the characters—led by the young and conflicted Lieutenant, played by Brenton Thwaites—settling into what appears to be a routine assignment. However, their sense of security is quickly upended when they begin to experience inexplicable occurrences within the castle walls, which serves as both their base and an eerie reminder of the war's violent history. The seemingly tranquil setting becomes a breeding ground for tension and dread, triggering a series of events that will challenge their sanity and camaraderie. As the narrative unfolds, the soldiers confront not only external threats from the war but also their own inner demons, exploring themes of identity, guilt, and the haunting legacies of conflict. Directed by Eric Bress, known for his work in the horror genre, the film oscillates between moments of taut suspense and unsettling supernatural elements. The tone is dark and foreboding, with an undercurrent of psychological horror that permeates the soldiers' interactions and their increasingly fragile mental states. The juxtaposition of wartime camaraderie against a backdrop of ghostly terror amplifies the film's exploration of survival and the haunting realities that accompany war. "Ghosts of War," released in 2020, emerges from the United States and taps into a rich vein of wartime horror, a subgenre that resonates with audiences familiar with both the psychological scars of battle and the supernatural. While the film has garnered mixed reviews, it speaks to viewers intrigued by the intersection of historical trauma and horror, offering a unique perspective on the toll that war takes not only on the body but also on the mind. As tensions rise and the soldiers' realities unravel, the film invites contemplation on the ghosts of the past and the inescapable nature of one's own history.
