Werner Herzog is a German film director and screenwriter who started his career with the film Herakles in 1961. He is a pioneer of New German Cinema, with a distinctive filmmaking style that often involves improvisation and placing cast and crew in challenging situations akin to those faced by characters. Herzog has directed over sixty feature films and documentaries, including Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Fitzcarraldo (1982), and Grizzly Man (2005). His work includes both narrative films and documentaries, such as Rescue Dawn (2007) and the animated Penguins of Madagascar (2014). Herzog has also authored numerous books and directed operas.
