Tanie Kitabayashi was a Japanese actress and voice actress who began her career as a stage performer. She gained recognition for her portrayals of older women and was a founding member of the Mingei Theatre, established in 1950. Kitabayashi won multiple awards, including best actress at the 10th Blue Ribbon Awards and the Mainichi Film Awards for her role in Kiku to Isamu (1960). She also received the Japan Academy Prize for best actress for her performance in Rainbow Kids (1991). In addition to her notable film work, she lent her voice to the character of Satsuki's grandmother in My Neighbor Totoro (1988).
