Sterling Hayden was an American actor and author who made his film debut in Virginia (1941). He transitioned from a leading man in the 1940s and 1950s to a character actor in notable films such as Dr. Strangelove (1964), The Godfather (1972), Nine to Five (1980), and King of the Gypsies (1978). Hayden's life included a stint as a ship's captain and a successful modeling career before being discovered by Paramount Studios. He wrote about his love for the sea in his autobiography, Wanderer (1963), and his novel, Voyage (1970). He appeared in 71 feature films and television productions, with his last role in the mini-series The Blue and the Gray (1982).
