Stephen Sondheim was an American composer and lyricist who wrote the lyrics for West Side Story (1957). He is a pivotal figure in 20th-century musical theatre, reinventing the American musical. Notable musicals include Company (1970), Follies (1971), and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979).
