Sherman Hemsley is an American actor who portrayed George Jefferson in the CBS sitcom All in the Family and its spin-off The Jeffersons. He gained recognition for his role as Deacon Ernest Frye in the NBC series Amen and as B.P. Richfield in the ABC series Dinosaurs. Hemsley received nominations for a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for his performance in The Jeffersons, and he won an NAACP Image Award. His career began on Broadway with the musical Purlie in the early 1970s. In addition to his television work, he appeared in American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (2009). Hemsley's legacy includes his memorable portrayal of George Jefferson, a character he found challenging yet defining.
