Sam Riley is an English actor who gained recognition for his portrayal of Ian Curtis in the film Control (2007), a biopic about the Joy Division frontman. His performance earned him the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer and a Kermode Award for Best Actor. Before this, he appeared as Mark E. Smith in 24 Hour Party People (2002), although his scenes were cut from the final version. Riley has also starred in Gerald McMorrow's Franklyn (2009) and played Pinkie Brown in the remake of Brighton Rock (2010). He features in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and Radioactive (2020).
