Rupert Davies is a British actor who portrayed the title character in the BBC's 1960s adaptation of Maigret, based on the novels by Georges Simenon. After serving in the British Merchant Navy during World War II, he was captured and interned in Stalag Luft III, where he began acting in theatre performances for fellow prisoners. Post-war, Davies became a prominent figure on British television, featuring in series such as Quatermass II, Danger Man, and Doctor at Large (1971). He also lent his voice to 'Professor Ian McClaine' in the Gerry Anderson series Joe 90 (1968). His film credits include roles in The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) and Witchfinder General (1968). Davies was the first recipient of the Pipe Smoker of the Year award in 1964.
