River Phoenix was an American actor who starred in the coming-of-age film Stand by Me (1986). He began his career in television commercials before gaining recognition for his role in the science fiction adventure Explorers (1985). Phoenix transitioned to more mature roles with performances in Running on Empty (1988), where he played Danny Pope, and My Own Private Idaho (1991), portraying Michael Waters. His work in My Own Private Idaho earned him several accolades, including the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. Phoenix's life was tragically cut short at the age of 23 due to drug intoxication.
