Raf Vallone was an Italian actor who made his film debut in We the Living (1942). He gained prominence with his role in Riso amaro (Bitter Rice) (1949), which established him as an international star. Vallone's notable performances include appearances in El Cid (1961) and other significant films throughout his career. Before acting, he played professional football in Serie A for Torino and was involved in journalism as the editorial head of the culture section for L'Unità. He was married to actress Elena Varzi, and they had three children, two of whom are actors. Vallone published his autobiography, L'alfabeto della memoria, in 2001.
