Peter Masterson was an American director, producer, and writer who directed The Trip to Bountiful (1985), which earned Geraldine Page an Academy Award for Best Actress. He began his career in acting during the mid-1960s, appearing in films such as Ambush Bay (1966), In the Heat of the Night (1967), and The Exorcist (1973). Masterson often collaborated with his cousin, Horton Foote, co-writing the musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1978) and its sequel. His other notable directing works include Full Moon in Blue Water (1988) and Blood Red (1989). Masterson's daughter, Mary Stuart Masterson, appeared alongside him in The Stepford Wives (1975). He directed The Trip to Bountiful, which highlighted his successful transition from acting to directing.
