Penny Marshall is an American actress, producer, and director who played Laverne DeFazio in the sitcom Laverne & Shirley. The show, which aired from 1976 to 1983, was a significant ratings success and earned her three Golden Globe nominations. She transitioned to directing with notable films such as Big (1988), which was the first film directed by a woman to surpass $100 million at the U.S. box office, and Awakenings (1990), nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Other directorial works include A League of Their Own (1992) and she also produced Cinderella Man (2005).
