Oliver Reed was an English actor who made his significant screen debut in Hammer Horror films during the early 1960s. His prominent film roles include Bill Sikes in the Oscar-winning Oliver! (1968), and performances in Women in Love (1969), The Devils (1971), and Tommy (1975). Reed portrayed Antonius Proximo, the gruff gladiator trainer, in Ridley Scott's Gladiator (2000), which marked his final film appearance. He received a posthumous BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this role. At the height of his career, he was voted the fifth most popular star at the British box office in 1971.
