Noël Coward was an English playwright, composer, director, actor, and singer who made his professional stage debut at the age of eleven. He wrote over 50 plays, with notable works including Hay Fever, Private Lives, and Blithe Spirit (1945), which have become staples in theatre. Coward also composed hundreds of songs and created numerous musical theatre pieces, poetry, and autobiographical works. He directed and acted in his own plays, and he received an Academy Honorary Award in 1943 for the naval drama In Which We Serve. Coward was knighted in 1969, and the Noël Coward Theatre in London was named in his honor in 2006.
