N. Viswanathan, popularly known as Calcutta Viswanathan, was an Indian actor and academic who had a significant impact on the Tamil film industry. He began his acting career in Bengali cinema, with notable performances in Mrinal Sen's Punascha and Satyajit Ray's Kanchenjungha. Over a span of more than 40 years, he appeared in nearly 100 films across Bengali, Tamil, and English languages. In addition to his film work, Viswanathan was an English professor at St. Xavier's College in Kolkata for over four decades and was also a prominent public speaker.
