Michaela Coel is a British actress and filmmaker who created and starred in the E4 sitcom Chewing Gum (2015–2017). She received a BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance for her role in Chewing Gum, and she won the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 2021 for her performance in the BBC One/HBO series I May Destroy You (2020). Coel made history as the first Black woman to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series for the same show at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. Her other notable works include guest appearances in Black Mirror (2016–2017) and starring roles in Black Earth Rising (2018) and Been So Long (2018). Coel will appear in The Christophers (2026).
