Maria Schell is an Austrian/Swiss actress who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival in 1956 for her performance in Gervaise. She was born into a family of performers, being the daughter of a Swiss author and an Austrian actress, and the elder sister of actor Maximilian Schell, along with lesser-known actors Carl and Immy Schell. Schell appeared in notable films such as The Last Bridge (1954), The Brothers Karamazov (1958), and Superman (1978).
