Maggie Smith is a British actress who portrayed Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001). She began her stage career in 1952 at the Oxford Playhouse and made her Broadway debut in New Faces of '56. Over her extensive career, she received two Academy Awards for her performances in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978). Smith's notable film credits include The Lady in the Van (2015), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). She was awarded the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Lettice and Lovage (1990).
