Lee Grant is an American actress and director who made her film debut in 1951 with a role as a young shoplifter in Detective Story. This performance garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952. Following a 12-year blacklist, she resumed her career, appearing in 71 episodes of Peyton Place and leading films such as Valley of the Dolls and In the Heat of the Night, both released in 1967. Grant won an Oscar for her role in Shampoo (1975) and received two Emmy Awards from seven nominations throughout her career. She also directed the documentary Down and Out in America, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1986.
