Ken Takakura is a Japanese actor who debuted in the film Denko Karate Uchi (1956). He portrayed tough-guy characters shaped by his experiences in postwar Fukuoka. His breakout role came in the 1965 film Abashiri Prison, where he played an ex-con antihero, followed by its sequel, Abashiri Bangaichi: Bokyohen, also released in 1965. Takakura gained international recognition with his performances in Too Late the Hero (1970) and Black Rain (1989), where he delivered the memorable line, "I do speak fucking English." His later work includes Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (2005), directed by Zhang Yimou.
