Jonas Mekas is a Lithuanian director who created the film ORG (1979). After moving to New York City in 1949, he became a pivotal figure in the American Avant-Garde film movement. He co-founded Film Culture magazine in 1954, which became a key publication in the U.S. film landscape, and initiated the Movie Journal column in the Village Voice in 1958. His notable works include The Brig (1963), which won the Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival, and Walden (1969). Mekas also established the Film-Makers' Cooperative and the Film-Makers' Cinematheque, now part of Anthology Film Archives. His influence extends beyond film, as he has published over 20 books of prose and poetry.
