Joe Alves is an American production designer who directed Jaws 3-D (1983). He designed the mechanical sharks for Jaws (1975), collaborating with Bob Mattey on their construction. Alves also worked on Jaws 2 (1978) as a production designer and second unit director, although he was not the final director. He received a BAFTA award for Best Art Direction for his work on Steven Spielberg's The Sugarland Express and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Additionally, he created a notable model of New York for John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981).
