Joao Pedro de Magalhaes is a Portuguese molecular biologist. He earned his degree in Microbiology from Escola Superior de Biotecnologia in 1999 and completed his PhD at the University of Namur in 2004. His postdoctoral work was conducted at Harvard Medical School, after which he led a lab at the University of Liverpool focusing on genomic approaches to aging. In 2022, he became Chair of Molecular Biogerontology at the University of Birmingham, where he oversees the Genomics of Aging and Rejuvenation Lab. His research includes sequencing the genomes of long-lived species such as the bowhead whale and the naked mole rat. He appears in the film Don't Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever (2025).
