Jerry Orbach was an American actor and singer who portrayed Detective Lennie Briscoe in the television series Law & Order from 1992 to 2004. He lent his voice to Lumière in Disney's animated classic Beauty and the Beast released in 1991. Orbach was also a prominent figure in musical theatre, having originated the role of El Gallo in The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical in history, and played Chuck Baxter in the original production of Promises, Promises, for which he received a Tony Award. Other notable performances include Julian Marsh in 42nd Street and Billy Flynn in the original Chicago. He appeared in the film Universal Soldier in 1992.
