James Whitmore was an American actor who received a Tony, a Grammy, and an Emmy, achieving three of the four EGOT honors. His significant film career began with MGM's Battleground, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and won a Golden Globe. Notable works include The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), and Give 'em Hell, Harry! (1975), where he portrayed former U.S. President Harry S. Truman. In addition to his film work, Whitmore had a prominent presence on television anthology series during the 1950s. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
