J. Mahendran is an Indian screenwriter and director known for his debut film, Mullum Malarum (1978), featuring Rajinikanth. He began his career in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter, penning scripts for around 26 films, including Thangappathakkam (1974). Mahendran directed films such as Uthiripookkal (1979), Johnny (1980), and Nenjathai Killathe (1980), which received three National Film Awards. He also wrote for films like Theri (2016) and Petta (2019). Mahendran's work has influenced many filmmakers and writers in Tamil cinema.
