Isaac Hayes was an American songwriter and musician who composed the score for the film Shaft (1971). He was a key figure at Stax Records, collaborating with David Porter in the 1960s and creating numerous hits, including the influential song "Soul Man". Hayes received an Academy Award for Best Original Song for his work on Shaft, making him the third African-American to win an Oscar in a competitive category. His film credits include It Could Happen to You (1994) and Reindeer Games (2000), as well as a notable role in the TV series The Rockford Files (1974–80). Hayes was honored as a BMI Icon in 2003 for his lasting impact on music.
