Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy was a Soviet film and stage actor who portrayed Hamlet in a 1964 film, which earned him a BAFTA nomination. He served in World War II and played a thief in the Soviet crime comedy Beware of the Car, where he stole cars from criminals to support orphanages. His career included performances in adaptations of Dostoyevsky's The Idiot at the Bolshoi Drama Theater in 1957 and Tolstoy's Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich at the Maly Theatre in 1973. In 1974, he was honored with the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
