Ian McKellen is an English actor who made his stage debut in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre. He has portrayed a wide range of characters in both theatre and film, including notable roles such as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–2003) and Magneto in the X-Men series. McKellen has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including a Tony Award for his performance in Amadeus (1980) and six Olivier Awards. His film credits also include The Da Vinci Code (2006), Last Action Hero (1993), and Mr. Holmes (2015). A prominent advocate for LGBT rights, McKellen co-founded the Stonewall lobby group and was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2014.
