Helen Hayes is an American actress who was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her career spanned nearly seven decades, during which she became known as the "First Lady of the American Theatre." Hayes is one of only twelve individuals to have received an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award. She was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1988. The Helen Hayes Theatre on Broadway was named in her honor in 1955, and after its demolition, the Little Theatre was renamed to continue her legacy. Hayes appeared in the film Airport (1970).
