Elena Poniatowska is a French-born Mexican journalist and author who contributed her voice to the animated film Xico's Journey (2020). She began her writing career at the age of eighteen with the newspaper Excélsior, focusing on social and political issues that affect marginalized groups, particularly women and the impoverished. Poniatowska is renowned for her work La noche de Tlatelolco, which addresses the 1968 student protests in Mexico City. Throughout her career, she has tackled various forms of writing, including both fiction and nonfiction. Her leftist perspectives have earned her the nickname "the Red Princess." Poniatowska is often referred to as "Mexico's grande dame of letters."
