Elaine May is an American actress, comedian, writer, and director who became the first female director with a Hollywood deal since Ida Lupino when she helmed the 1971 film A New Leaf. She gained prominence in the 1950s through her improvisational comedy performances alongside Mike Nichols, which included their stage act Nichols and May. May has acted in films such as California Suite (1978) and Ishtar (1987), and she earned critical acclaim for her screenplays for Heaven Can Wait (1978) and The Birdcage (1996). Her work has been recognized with multiple awards, including a BAFTA Award and a Tony Award for her performance in The Waverly Gallery (2018). In 2022, she received an Honorary Academy Award.
