Eileen Brennan is an American actress who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Captain Doreen Lewis in Private Benjamin (1980). She made her film debut in Divorce American Style (1967) and gained recognition through her performances in The Last Picture Show (1971), The Cheap Detective (1978), and Clue (1985). In addition to her film work, Brennan won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Mrs. Hughes in Newhart. Her extensive television credits include appearances on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Cheers, and Will & Grace. Brennan's notable roles also feature Sister Act (1992) and she continued acting until her health declined due to multiple myeloma, which she battled from 2001 until her death in 2013.
