Charles Laughton was an English-American actor who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933). He began his professional stage career in 1926 after training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Laughton starred in notable films such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), and The Big Clock (1948). He also directed the thriller The Night of the Hunter (1955) and took on stage directing later in his career, including productions like The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Laughton's performances have inspired many, including actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
