Burt Lancaster was an American film actor who won an Academy Award for his performance in Elmer Gantry (1960). Renowned for his athletic build and unique smile, he transitioned from a tough-guy persona to more complex roles, gaining recognition as one of his generation's finest actors. His production company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, was a pioneering force in independent cinema during the 1950s, producing notable films such as Marty (1955), Trapeze (1956), and Sweet Smell of Success (1957). Lancaster received BAFTA Awards for his performances in The Birdman of Alcatraz (1962) and Atlantic City (1980). He was also named the nineteenth greatest male star of all time by the American Film Institute in 1999.
