Brigitte Bardot is a French actress who gained international fame for her performance in the controversial film And God Created Woman (1956), directed by her then-husband Roger Vadim. She began her acting career in 1952 and appeared in a total of 47 films, including notable works such as Contempt (1963) and Viva Maria! (1965), the latter earning her a BAFTA nomination for Best Foreign Actress. Bardot was also a prominent figure in French intellectual circles, inspiring Simone de Beauvoir's essay, The Lolita Syndrome, which characterized her as a pioneering liberated woman in post-war France. After retiring from acting in 1973, she became an animal rights activist but faced criticism for her political views. Bardot was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1985 but declined to accept it.
