Brendan Coyle is a British-Irish actor who won the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role for his work in The Weir (1999). He gained recognition for portraying John Bates, the valet, in the series Downton Abbey, a role specifically written for him by Julian Fellowes. Coyle's notable performances include Nicholas Higgins in the miniseries North & South and Robert Timmins in Lark Rise to Candleford. He also appeared in the film Conspiracy (2001) as Gestapo Chief Heinrich Müller. Coyle received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a BAFTA for his role in Downton Abbey. He has received multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards from 2013 to 2016.
