Alfonso Arau is a Mexican filmmaker and actor who gained international recognition with the film Like Water for Chocolate (1992), adapted from his wife Laura Esquivel's novel. He has worked extensively in both Mexican and Hollywood cinema for over four decades. His notable acting credits include A Walk in the Clouds (1995), Picking Up the Pieces (2000), The Magnificent Ambersons (2002), and Zapata: El sueño del héroe (2004). Arau has won five Ariel Awards, including Best Director for Like Water for Chocolate, and received a BAFTA nomination. He also lent his voice to the character Papá Miguel in Coco (2017).
