Zana Briski is an English artist and activist who directed the Academy Award-winning documentary Born into Brothels (2004). Her journey into photography began at the age of ten, leading her to earn a master's degree from the University of Cambridge and study documentary photography in New York. In 1997, she focused on the lives of children in Calcutta's red-light district, a project that would define much of her work. Briski has received several prestigious awards, including the Alicia Patterson Journalism Fellowship and the George Soros' Open Society Institute Fellowship. She is also the founder of the non-profit organization Kids With Cameras, which aims to empower children through photography. Briski's impactful work has significantly highlighted social issues in India.
