Walter Barnes was an American football guard and actor who played in the NFL for four seasons. He transitioned to acting after appearing on a local television show in Philadelphia, which led to roles in various series such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Barnes also worked in European cinema, particularly in pirate films and Spaghetti Westerns during the 1960s, and he had notable collaborations with Clint Eastwood. He appeared in High Plains Drifter (1973) and played Charlie the Bartender in Rio Bravo. Barnes retired from acting in 1987 and was the father of German actress Lara Wendel.
