Vic Tayback is an American actor who played Mel Sharples in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) and its subsequent television adaptation, Alice (1976–1985). He began his acting career after serving in the United States Navy and became a prominent figure on television during the 1960s and 1970s, featuring in series such as The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Columbo. Tayback also appeared in films including Bullitt (1968), Papillon (1973), and All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989). For his role in Alice, he received two consecutive Golden Globe Awards in 1980 and 1981. He was a co-founder of the theatre troupe Company of Angels and was a lifetime member of the Actors Studio.
