Richard O'Barry is an American activist who founded the Dolphin Project in 1970. Initially recognized in the 1960s for training the dolphins used in the television series Flipper, he shifted his focus to opposing the captivity of marine mammals after a dolphin's tragic death in his arms. O'Barry has worked tirelessly to educate the public about the issues surrounding dolphin captivity and has been featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary The Cove (2009), which highlights the dolphin hunting practices in Taiji, Japan.
