R. Neelakantan made his film debut in Aayiram Poi, released in 1966. He began his acting journey in school dramas and continued performing in college at Vivekananda College, where he co-founded Viveka Fine Arts alongside Ambi and Narayanasamy. Neelakantan has appeared in various plays, including Muhammad bin Tughluq and Quo Vadis, and collaborated with notable figures such as Crazy Mohan and Cho Ramaswamy. His filmography includes roles in Anniyan (2005) and Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (2017). Throughout his career, he worked closely with director V D Swamy before retiring after four decades in his day job.
