Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese animation director who gained recognition with the original video animation She and Her Cat (1999). He began his career in 1996 as a video game animator before establishing a long-term collaboration with CoMix Wave Films. His notable works include the romantic drama anthology 5 Centimeters per Second (2007) and the fantasy romance Your Name (2016), which became the third highest-grossing anime film ever. Other significant films in his filmography are The Garden of Words (2013) and Weathering with You (2019). Shinkai's seventh feature film, Suzume, was released in 2022.
