Maïwenn is a French actress and filmmaker who directed the 2023 film Jeanne du Barry. She began her career as a child actress, notably appearing as 'Elle, as a child' in the 1983 film L'été meurtrier. After a hiatus following her marriage to director Luc Besson, she returned to the screen in films like The Fifth Element (1997) and Haute Tension (2003). Transitioning to directing, her first feature, Pardonnez-moi (2006), garnered César nominations. Her film Polisse (2011) won the Jury Prize at Cannes, while Mon roi (2015) competed for the Palme d'Or.
