John Barnett was an American whistleblower who reported on safety and quality issues concerning Boeing's production of the 787 Dreamliner. He dedicated 32 years to quality control at Boeing, including seven years as a manager in South Carolina. Barnett publicly revealed malpractices at Boeing in 2019, which led to his involvement in the 2022 Netflix documentary Downfall: The Case Against Boeing. His complaints about safety issues, such as malfunctioning emergency oxygen systems, were corroborated by Boeing's internal investigations, prompting the FAA to mandate remedial actions. Barnett's whistleblower case against Boeing remained pending at the time of his death in March 2024, which was ruled a suicide.
