Charlotte Rae is an American actress and singer who portrayed Edna Garrett in the sitcoms Diff'rent Strokes and its spin-off, The Facts of Life. Rae began her career performing in theater and nightclubs in New York City after moving there in 1948, where she shared stages with emerging talents like Barbra Streisand and Mike Nichols. She appeared in the film You Don't Mess with the Zohan in 2008, among other projects. Rae's early work included radio performances and involvement with the Wauwatosa Children's Theatre. She attended Northwestern University, where she met influential figures in the entertainment industry.
